Healthy Momos are gaining quite popularity in India. When Momos first arrived in India a decade ago, no one expected a food item to turn into a significant reason behind childhood obesity in India. Fried Momos could be found almost everywhere in India; it has become the primary reason for obesity and often remains unchecked.
In our recent analysis, we found that one plate of Steamed Momos has around 400 calories which are also unhealthy. Fried Momos contains as many as 1200 Calories. 1200 Calories are enough to fuel almost half of the calorie requirement in the human body for a single day.
Ideal serving: 10 Pieces of Momos served with Shezwan Sauce and Oil-based Mayonnaise.
Here you can see the Calorie Chart of Wheat dim sums (Momos) released by the Hong Kong SAR government. It’s the only authoritative calorie chart of Momos available on the internet.
With the help of a chart provided by the Hong Kong Govt and analysis of fried foods, we can safely say that.
- One Plate of Vegetarian Momos Calories (Wheat or Whole Wheat): 400 Calories
- One Plate of Fried Vegetarian Momos Calories (Wheat or Whole Wheat): 1200 Calories
The amount would be similar in Non-Vegetarian Momos as well.
Why Fried Momos are Extreme Unhealthy
There are two primary reasons which make Fried Momos a major reason contributor to Obesity.
1. High Amounts of Sodium
National Academy of Medicine (NAM) recommends a daily sodium intake of fewer than 2,300 mg per day. One whole plate of Wheat Momos can complete this take on its own. If you’re consuming any more food which contains sodium, then it’s impacting your health negatively.
2. Unporportionate Amounts of Calories
A plate of Fried Momos has almost ten pieces, giving you 1200-1300 calories depending on the size and preparation. However, in those 1200 calories, you’re unlikely to absorb any kinds of essential nutrients to your body. You can take an entire diet for the day in 1200 calories.
3. High in Fat
Momos are super-rich in fats which will make your weight loss journey impossible. 100 Grams of Steamed Momos can be rich with 5-10 Grams of Fat, and this number goes thrice when we talk about Fried Momos.
One Plate of Fried Momos, which is usually consumed as a snack, is equally dangerous for your health as much as eating 400 Grams of Sugar in one go.
Should I Eat Healthy Momos for Weight Loss
There is no such thing as “Healthy Momos.” Many articles published by esteemed media houses often create a misconception that Atta Momos (Whole wheat momos) are a healthier food option.
Also, some articles mentioned that Atta Momos are suitable for people with diabetes and heart patients. This claim is entirely false. Consumption of only healthy foods is recommended for diabetes and heart patients.
Generally, the calorie difference arising due to preparation using different flours is not more than 30%. A significant chunk of calories occurs due to the procedure of frying momos. Hence, it would not make a considerable difference if you use Atta or Maida for momos preparation.
How can I safely eat “Healthy Momos”
Momos aren’t nutritious. No matter how much broccoli you will add, the core preparation is going to remain the same.
The only way to safely eat momos is to control the portion size, considering the massive amount of 120 calories in every 100 grams. It’s recommended to eat a maximum of 2 momos to be on the safer side.
Possible Health Problems Due to Momos
Saturated Fats are the worst type of unhealthy fats which you can find in Fried Momos. That is why the consumption of these many calories is considered super harmful for the human body.
If you observed any of these issues while consuming momos daily, immediately contact your health practitioner.
